Analysis: Sexually harmful behaviour - Children need more specialist help

The number of children showing sexually harmful behaviour has soared but a lack of specialist services in many parts of the country means it is hard to prevent the problem from getting worse. Asha Goveas finds out what needs to be done.

The number of children reported as exhibiting sexually harmful behaviour is on the rise, according to the NSPCC (Children Now, 10-16 November).

Figures from the charity's specialist services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland indicate that 1,200 children have been referred in the past year, including 400 aged under 10, compared to 227 from 1993 to 1999. Home Office statistics from 2001 suggest one in five sex offenders found guilty or cautioned is under 18.

The sexualisation of children

Kevin Gibbs, area children's service manager for the NSPCC in south and east Wales, says the increase in referrals can be explained by an expansion of services and an increase in awareness. He says the number of treatment clinics has risen from a handful to 22 in the past decade.
