Report reveals local failings in tackling harmful sexual behaviour by children

5 mins read Youth Justice
Clinical experts, the voluntary sector and local authorities are to join forces to develop and trial a framework outlining a best practice response to working with young people who display harmful sexual behaviour.

A soon-to-be published report reviewing current policy and practice for supporting children and young people who display harmful sexual behaviours highlights the need for local authorities to develop a more robust, joined-up response on the issue.

Children and Young People with Harmful Sexual Behaviours by Research in Practice at the Dartington Hall Trust examines local policies, interventions, inter-agency working and assessments used when working with children and young people who commit acts of sexual abuse.

The report – a summary of which has been seen by CYP Now – highlights inadequacies, such as a lack of assessment tools for pre-adolescent children and a lack of confidence among practitioners, which often lead to unco-ordinated and fragmented responses.
