Letter - Give parents discipline options

I felt compelled to write after reading the Social Claire comment on smacking (Children Now, 2-8 February).

I am the team leader in an intensive support team in Warwickshire, working with children, young people and families to prevent family breakdown. We are constantly working with parents who are under pressure because of work/financial pressures, mental or physical health problems, relationship break-up and so on.

The subject of smacking comes up regularly and as social workers we make it very clear that should they cause injury to their children they are likely to be investigated. However, simply guilt-tripping is not enough. I believe our task is to empower parents to work it out for themselves by giving them information and some ideas.
