Letter: Adoption for gay couples

1 min read
Your news in brief inaccurately suggests that the forthcoming sexual orientation regulations will enable gay couples to adopt jointly (Children Now, 17-23 January).

Gay couples have in fact been able to apply to adopt jointly since newadoption laws contained in the Adoption and Children Act 2002 tookeffect in December 2005.

Johan Jensen, education officer, Stonewall.

- The best interests of children must be paramount. Many children waittoo long for an adoptive family. Some never find one.

The British Association for Adoption & Fostering has campaigned to widenthe pool of prospective adopters to ensure as many children as possibleare given the opportunity to be placed in loving families. There aremany examples of successful adoptions made by single gay and lesbianpeople.

We believe enabling gay and lesbian couples to adopt jointly hascontributed to increasing the number of permanent, loving families.
