Manchester gay adoption success

1 min read Social Care
The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) has praised a local authority for its success in recruiting gay couples to adopt children.

According to BAAF, Manchester City Council has approved six same sex couples for adoption and three for fostering in the past two years.

Mo O’Reilly, director of child placement services at BAAF, said: “In 2006 there were only 42 same sex couples referred to the Adoption Register for England and Wales. The fact that Manchester has approved nine couples for fostering and adoption in two years is therefore quite staggering. It’s really encouraging to see such great work being done.”

According to equality charity Stonewall, although gay couples have been allowed to adopt since 2005, nine out of 10 gay couples expect barriers to becoming a foster parent.
