Adoption: Anti-discrimination proposals hailed

Proposals to ban discrimination against gay couples who want to adopt have been welcomed by the gay rights group Stonewall.

The plans, Getting Equal: Proposals to outlaw sexual orientationdiscrimination in the provision of goods and services, includerecommendations made by Prime Minister Tony Blair in January that noexemption should be given to Catholic adoption agencies.

Alan Wardle, director of parliamentary and public affairs for Stonewall'said: "Adoption is about what is best for children. Ruling out a wholegroup of people is not in their best interest. Agencies should attractas many people as they can to adopt."

The proposals, which will come into force on 30 April, subject toparliamentary approval, state: "The Government will provide a transitionperiod for faith-based adoption and fostering agencies until the end of2008."
