Learning disabilities: Web site to use picture language

A web site that provides news and information in pictures for children with learning disabilities has been launched by The Children's Society.

The charity believes that the site is the first of its kind in theworld.

The site uses Symbol, a language of pictures and written words, toprovide news, music and film reviews for children who have difficultyreading text.

Users can add stories, jokes and feedback, which will be automaticallyconverted into Symbol by software written for the web site.

The site will cost 134,731 over three years with money from TheChildren's Society and the Big Lottery Fund.

IT firms Widget Software and Solutions Squared created the web site andthe software to convert text to symbols.
