Laindon Nursery, Essex.

How are they promoting outdoor play? Along with the children who attend the setting and their parents, the nursery has designed and created an outdoor play area. It mirrors the play-based ethos the setting has created indoors and provides the children with ways to fulfil the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements.

What inspired the idea? It was part of a project conducted with the school grounds charity Learning Through Landscapes and nine other neighbourhood nurseries.

How were children and parents consulted? Older children were asked what they would like to see and nursery staff observed what the babies appeared to enjoy. The children also created artwork based on their ideas, which was put up along with a suggestion box for parents. Then staff created a detailed plan, before calling upon the children and parents to help create the final concept.

What does it include? A nature garden with long grass, logs and small rocks; teepees; a vegetable patch; a digging area; and a sensory garden with lots of colours and wind chimes.
