Lack of knowledge hinders adoption

1 min read Social Care
Children could be missing out on adoption due to misconceptions about who is a suitable parent, a survey has found.

A YouGov poll for the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) found more than one in three people thought being over the age of 40 would prevent them from being able to adopt. The survey of 2,000 people found 23 per cent thought being a single man would stop them and 14 per cent thought being a single woman would be a barrier to adopting.

Less than a third of people surveyed (29 per cent) knew abuse or neglect were the most common reasons children are adopted, while 41 per cent thought the most common reason was because birth parents gave up a child.
