Junior Eco-Warriors: Children protect the environment

Eilish Hare and Leighton Heys, both six, became eco-warriors when St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, devoted a day to recycling and improving the environment. The school, which became one of the county's Eco Schools in 2002, holds the Green Flag, the environmental Oscar. Staff focus on a different environmental theme each term, and the school hosts an eco-committee made up of pupils, staff and members of the local community.

Geography co-ordinator Frances Duxbury, who has been behind the school's eco-friendly focus, said: "This is a brilliant way to encourage the pupils to make the right choices and think about the global environment just as much as their school and home environment."
