The Garden School, Hackney - special school inspection - June 2014
The connotations behind the Garden School's name are plentiful. It could allude to the eco-friendly design of the buildings and grounds, the state-of-the-art sensory facilities incorporated in it, not to mention the ethos that it is a place for its pupils to grow.
Whatever the origins of the name, the Hackney school, which opened in September 2013, has already landed an "outstanding" rating from Ofsted. It was built following the merger of a primary and a secondary special school that catered for children with autism or severe learning difficulties.
The merger brings many benefits to pupils, says deputy head teacher Pat Quigley. "The school offers a highly specialised environment and curriculum, and our staff are well trained to work with children diagnosed with autism," she says.
