Jargon buster - The Compact

1 min read
Where might you hear it? In conversations about how central and local government works with charities.

What does it mean? Established in 1998, the Compact is an agreement between government and the voluntary and community sectors in England. It recognises shared principles and sets out guidelines for how both parties should work together.

Under the terms of the Compact, both the government and voluntary sector should work together to improve outcomes for the community.

Local Compacts aim to make this national agreement a reality by strengthening relationships between charities and local public bodies. For instance, five codes of practice set out the different aspects of the relationship such as funding and policy appraisal.

A consultation on a revised national Compact runs until 12 October. The new version will be launched during Compact Week 2009, which runs from 2 to 8 November.
