What does it mean? C2DE is a common market research term used to describe the working classes. It is based on a system created by the National Readership Survey, which was originally developed to classify readers. The classifications are based on the occupation of the head of the household and break down into A, B, C1, C2, D and E. A equates to upper middle class while E represents the "underclass". Nowadays, grades are often grouped into ABC1 and C2DE, which equate to middle class and working class respectively.
A poll conducted by YouGov in May showed that 30 per cent of respondents who fall in to the C2DE group are currently worried about housing costs and expect to face difficulties paying household bills such as rent, mortgage repayments and utility costs over the next 12 months.
