What does it mean? Sexting is the act of sending sexually explicit images or messages between mobile phones. It is a modern phenomenon that appears to be developing a high profile in courtrooms across the US. A number of teenagers have faced charges of sexual abuse in recent months, after the messages fell into the wrong hands. The recent spate of cases has led to children as young as 16 facing a possible seven years in prison for child pornography offences.
American laws, like those in the UK, state that it is illegal to send or distribute an explicit image of under-18s. With the advent of mobile phone technology, it is now serving to prosecute the same young people it was intended to protect.
