Jargon buster: Flexicles

Where might you hear it? In a business meeting about employees' childcare needs.

What does it mean? Flexicles is a term that appears to have been coined by Equality North East, a charity based in Gateshead that promotes fairness and diversity in the workplace. The term refers to a short-term adjustment in the flexibility of an employee's working hours for a set period of a few weeks or months. The flexicle is apparently aimed at the "sandwich generation" who need greater freedom to care for their children and elderly parents. It eliminates the need for an employee to make permanent changes to their job or request flexibility on an ad-hoc basis when they have family issues which they know will last a number of weeks.
