Where you might hear it: From politicians, children's professionals and anyone marketing products intended to improve health.

What does it mean: The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) recently commissioned the consultancy Linguistic Landscapes to define "wellbeing". Its research suggests the term is "no less than what a group of people agree makes 'a good life'". The DCSF uses the term within publications such as Every Child Matters. In this context it represents a holistic ideal, captured by the five outcomes of Every Child Matters: to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic wellbeing.
