Islington Council, north London

1 min read Education Extra-curricular
What are they doing? Islington is becoming a hub for young scientists. In 2008, only 58 Islington students took the triple science GCSE. The figure for the current academic year stands at 382.

How? The council was awarded funding from the Learning Skills Network in 2009 to run a triple science network. Events were organised in secondary schools across the borough, to encourage students to find out about what the subject involves and the career options it can lead to.

Anything else? The triple science network organised a science careers day for students at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Mount Carmel School. More than 200 Year 9 and 10 students came along to find out about science-related careers and attend workshops. One of the most popular workshops was run by the London College of Fashion and gave students the chance to make their own shampoo.
