ISLE OF MAN MURDERS: Inquiry to look at running of homes

An inquiry into children's services on the Isle of Man will only be launched once Peter Newbery, sentenced last week for murdering two teenagers in their care home, has had the chance to appeal.

And Trevor Noden, the island's assistant director of social services, said the inquiry would be "irrelevant" if the appeal process took too long.

The children's services department would "move forward with our five-year plan" in the meantime, he added.

"In response to the murders, we have set up CCTV, expanded the child and adolescent mental health service and begun to risk assess youngsters."

Last week, Newbery was handed a life sentence for strangling and stabbing 16-year-olds Samantha Barton and George Green at the Leece Lodge Two care home in February 2002.
