Sitting in her office overlooking the River Thames, it's clear Julie Jones is looking forward to taking up her new post as chief executive of the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). Her background as a director of children's services at Westminster City Council, where she worked in a variety of roles for 25 years, gives her a particular interest in the children's sector.

The position will take her back to her roots in research, where shestarted her career with Camden Council.

Her love for research started when she took up a job in Camden Council'ssocial services department as a research and planning officer.

Jones says: "I moved into the research function in Camden socialservices in the days when local authority social services departments -particularly innovative exciting ones - had their own research andplanning functions in-house."

When she took time out to have her two daughters and take a mastersdegree, she did her dissertation on how research impacts policy-makingin what was then social services.

"I always had a real passion for research and evidence, policy andpractice," she explains.
