Catherine Law, play development officer, Hull City Council.

As Hull City Council's play development officer, Catherine Law hasreason to be cheerful. The council's bid for more than 816,000worth of improvements for play was recently accepted by the Big LotteryFund.

The council was one of just 32 across England to take a share in 12m handed out through the Children's Play Programme; no easy task giventhat all of the 19 councils that applied for the first wave of fundingwere knocked back (Children Now, 21-27 February).

Law says: "We heard what happened first time round to other councils, but it didn't put us off, we were determined that it wouldn't happen tous."

According to the Big Lottery Fund, of the first wave of fundingapplications, three were thrown out as they failed to meet the criteriaand the rest needed further work to make them fundable. Law says Hullpaid close attention to the key criteria that the fund expected, such aspartnership working, and made sure that as clear a picture as possiblewas presen-ted of how the money would be spent.
