NCB Now: Interview - Producing a winning play strategy

1 min read
Helen Jackson, programme manager for The Children's Society and play lead in Solihull.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council is among the first local authorityareas in England to benefit from the Big Lottery Fund's 124mChildren's Play programme. We asked Helen Jackson to share some key tipsto success.

- What are your top tips?

Start early. We had a play strategy group in place from 2005 and haddone a lot of consensus building and values type work before the lotterymoney was available. We made contact with other local authority playstaff that willingly shared their time and expertise with us. Somepartners will be harder to engage, as they don't see play as theirremit; meet with these people one to one to get them onside. Our electedmember for children and young people has been supportive throughout, soget them involved. Similarly do the same with elected member(s) for openspaces etc. We've also got parts of this bid onto the local areaagreement, which will ensure its profile over time.
