Interview: Business must do its bit - Jonathan Blain, chief executive, Employers Childcare Network

3 mins read
"Use what's there and stop whinging!" Not the usual line taken on the challenge of funding affordable childcare, but Jonathan Blain is not your normal policy wonk.

A self-professed entrepreneur, and a father of three, Blain spearheads the Employers Childcare Network, an organisation that he claims will solve the UK's childcare issues "once and for all".

The idea, he explains, is that ECN lends companies capital to build workplace nurseries. Employers will pay ECN back by charging employees for nursery places - but both employers and employees can tap into tax and National Insurance breaks for workplace nurseries and save money, hence "use what's there".

And, unlike many in the childcare sector, Blain does not expect the Government to step in and hand out more cash.

"This Government has pumped hundreds of millions of pounds into childcare, particularly for lower-paid workers. So yes, of course it would be nice of them to do more, but I live in a realistic world where we all want more but we don't necessarily want to pay higher taxes," he says.
