Sustainability is increasingly identified as the major challenge in developing affordable, quality childcare.

Despite the current boom in childcare provision, with start-up funding enabling the development of many childcare places through neighbourhood nurseries, out-of-school childcare, day nurseries, childminders, and more recently children's centres, the need to ensure ongoing sustainability is crucial if they are to continue.

In the capital, the Mayor of London has responded to the problem of sustainability for childcare providers with the launch of the London childcare strategy last November. Its aim is to increase the availability of quality, affordable childcare in the capital by using London Development Agency funds to support childcare, promoting family friendly employment practices, improving information and communication about childcare provision and promoting tax credits.
