"After the experience of working on something that had come out of an exclusion unit piece of work, Bridging the Gap, I thought it would be worthwhile to work in the unit itself and look at a broader range of social exclusion issues," she says.
They don't come much broader than this. The Government set up the unit in 1997 to "lead innovative thinking" across the linked problems suffered by society's most disadvantaged, and since joining Tyler has worked on reports focusing on issues from runaway and looked-after children to mental health and transport.
A constant theme, reprised in the in the unit's recent seven-year progress review, Breaking the Cycle, is getting children out of poverty by preventing disadvantage being passed from mother to child.
