Whitehall unit to focus on welfare

Social Care
Work and pensions secretary Peter Hain has announced plans for a dedicated unit to oversee the government's efforts to reduce child poverty.

The Child Poverty Unit will be run by the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). It will be based at the DCSF, and will work with the Treasury.

Neera Sharma, principal policy officer at Barnardo's, will be joining the unit on secondment. The unit aims to co-ordinate child poverty work across government departments.

Hilary Fisher, director of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, said: "It's encouraging to see child poverty treated as the cross-government issue that it is."

Carey Oppenheim, chair of the London Child Poverty Commission, added: "The unit should help bring about a more co-ordinated approach from government and provide better support for agencies commited to tackling this problem," she said.
