Child poverty: Harker to focus on family support

The Government's child poverty tsar will this week outline her plans for rejuvenating its child poverty strategy.

Lisa Harker's report was expected to be published today (Wednesday),three months after the former Children Now columnist was appointed tothe role (Children Now, 28 June-4 July).

The report is understood to contain three key themes. The first theme isa stronger focus on support for all families, not just lone parents.

The second theme is ensuring that parents get help with not onlyentering work, but with staying in and progressing in work. The thirdtheme is supporting parents who are out of work, but not on welfare towork programmes by working more closely with children's centres andvoluntary organisations.

Neera Sharma, principal policy officer at Barnardo's, welcomed plans tohelp two-parent families back to work. She said: "We know that half ofall children who are poor live in a family where at least one adult isin work so, where possible, partners in two-parent families should beencouraged to go back to work." But she added that this would requirebetter childcare provision.
