Harker, who is also a former Children Now columnist, said: "My job willbe to provide some challenge and ideas, and to cast an independent eyeover the strategy. I expect to be working with many of the stakeholdersin the sector."
An advisory group of academics and stakeholders is also being convenedto advise on the new strategy, which is due to launch this autumn. Thegroup will include Carey Oppenheim, chair of the London Child PovertyCommission, and Kate Green, chief executive of the Child Poverty ActionGroup.
Experts have warned that the Government will miss its target of halvingchild poverty by 2010 compared to 1998 unless it comes up with newpolicies to build on the work that has already been done.
