The art of story-telling is being kept alive by a unique charity based in Stratford, east London, which celebrates its first birthday this month.

Discover claims to be the only centre in the UK that focuses on words, creativity, imagination and language in order to inspire children, parents and teachers. And its approach appears to be working, having attracted more than 34,000 visitors to date.

Discover's Story Garden, just off Stratford's busy high street, was once a local eyesore. Now it has been transformed thanks to more than 160,000 from the Community Fund, London Development Agency, Cleanaway and Entrust. Schoolchildren from the local area helped to plan and design the space, which is a mixture of greenery, sculptures and colourful play equipment.
