Goal: To prevent children from having accidents in the home
Funding: 48,000 from the Department of Trade and Industry for the project's first year
Contact: David Taylor, 020 8846 6280
Every day, accidents in the home lead to 10 deaths in the UK and leave another 8,000 people seeking medical help. Children, especially the under-fives, are particularly at risk. These startling statistics prompted the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham to set up a project targeting families with young children in a bid to cut the accident rate.
Working from referrals from agencies such as social services, nurseries, Sure Start projects and health services, Cares worker David Taylor visits families to offer advice and even loan and fit equipment, such as smoke alarms or safety gates.
