Giving children the skills to say no to drugs has long been recognised as a task combining school-based education with parental and community involvement. The Blueprint project aims to establish how this best works in practice with the UK's biggest ever drug education research programme, involving secondary schools in Cheshire, Derby City, Derbyshire and Lancashire.
Of the 29 schools participating, 23 are piloting the Blueprint approach with groups of 11-year-olds over two years, while the remainder continue with their present drug education programme as a control.
