Briefing: Research report - Pre-teen drug misuse

A new report shows that a significant minority of children come into contact with drugs before they reach their teens, despite drug education.

A "significant minority" of children are exposed to and using drugs before they enter their teens, according to researchers at the University of Glasgow.

A third of the 2,300-plus 10- to 12-year-olds surveyed in Glasgow and Newcastle as part of the Department of Health's Drug Misuse Research Initiative had been exposed to illegal drugs, one in 10 had been offered illegal drugs, and almost one in 20 had started to use them.

Four-fifths of the pre-teens who had taken drugs in the last month were using cannabis. Researchers say their findings also suggest that around 60 pupils in Glasgow and more than 30 in Newcastle will have used heroin.
