Information sharing: Parental consent law to be scrapped

The Government is set to scrap laws requiring parental consent before children's services can share information, Children Now has learned.

At present, services must get consent before sharing information unlessthis is being done for child protection or crime prevention reasons.

But, as part of plans to create a database containing details of everychild in England, the Government intends to change the law so localauthorities can share information without consent.

The change will be included in a consultation on the Government'sinformation sharing index that will start early this year. The index isexpected to be operational by the end of 2008.
