INFORMATION SHARING: Delay in review of Data Protection Act

Guidance on how social services departments should interpret the Data Protection Act will not be reviewed before the end of the Bichard inquiry into the case of Ian Huntley and the consultation on the Government's green paper Every Child Matters.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said a review at this stage could pre- empt the inquiry and consultation. The green paper proposes local information hubs, which would list information about children gathered by social services and other agencies.

The Information Commissioner has issued no guidance on the Act for the social care sector, a spokeswoman said - only generic guidance for the public sector. The Department of Health had prepared its 2001 guidance without the help of the Commissioner. "If approached we would be willing to help," she said.
