Child Protection: Met calls for national sharing of data

1 min read
Information sharing needs to take place on a national basis if it is to achieve the objectives of the green paper, the country's senior child protection police officer has warned.

Detective Chief Superintendent Peter Spindler, head of child protection at the Metropolitan Police, said proposals for regional or local information hubs would make it more difficult for police forces to co-operate in the fight against child abuse.

"The Children Bill has failed to grasp the nettle as regards information sharing," he told a New Local Government Network conference on children's rights. "My fear is that we will have too many local hubs.

"If we are going to be serious about safeguarding children and preventing them from falling through the cracks, we need a more robust approach," he told delegates.

He said the Metropolitan Police was currently drawing up a safeguarding children policy.
