Information sharing: Cadet forces to set up youth database

The 600,000 database initiative, Project Westminster, will provide both organisations with a system to manage their cadet members, helping to reduce paperwork for volunteers.

Peter Freeman, IT manager at the Sea Cadets, said: "We have 400 units and the database will help us keep track of cadets."

The database, jointly funded by both organisations, will be accessible online through a secure link, with restrictions on the information that different levels of volunteers can access. It has the capacity to link to other systems but is not expected to link up with the Department for Education and Skills' child index, said Freeman.
