Independent School Inspectorates - A Consultation Document

This consultation covers proposed future arrangements for appointing inspectorates other than Ofsted to inspect independent schools.

Ofsted is the single inspection body in England, with a remit covering education, children's services and skills. Within this it inspects a significant number of independent schools and all residential settings for children and young people. The Education Act 2002 makes provision for alternative arrangements for inspecting education provision in independent schools, and these arrangements are carried forward in the Education and Skills Bill currently before Parliament.

This paper takes stock of the recent developments in independent school inspections and poses questions about the future development of independent school inspectorates. The Department for Children, Schools and Families proposes that all inspectorates make prominent reference in their inspection reports to the Ofsted monitoring arrangements.
