In the News: Young people mistake an otter for a meerkat. Surely there is no comparison?

2 mins read
It may be a new year but some things never change -- like surveys designed to highlight the shocking ignorance of young people today.

The latest — commissioned by the Organic Milk Co-operative no less — revealed children's lack of knowledge of wildlife.

"One in 10 children think squirrels live underground and one in four believes foxes make their homes in trees," reported The Daily Express, which described the results as "a damning indictment of the computer game generation who never venture into the countryside or learn about nature". The paper continued: "When shown a picture of an otter, a third of sevento 11-year-olds thought it was either a badger, a meerkat or a mongoose."

That is indeed shocking. How could they possibly mistake an otter for a meerkat given the prominence of a certain furry mascot for a price comparison website? Pack them all off on a wilderness weekend. Simples.
