In Practice: Up & running - Haven in East Sussex

A balloon race, bouncy castles and ex-EastEnder Patsy Palmer helped launch Peacehaven Children's Centre in East Sussex last month. It's one of a network of centres being developed by East Sussex County Council in partnership with local primary care trusts and other groups. The centre is based around a Sure Start programme established at a health centre run by Sussex Downs and Weald Primary Care Trust.

Parents and children unveiled a mosaic they'd created at the launch ofCamden's first children's centre. Services at Kilburn Grange Children'sCentre include childcare, parental education and breastfeedingsupport.

Two extended schools clusters and a secondary school in Sandwell havewon recognition for their efforts to open up to the wider community. TheWham partnership, Greets Green Primary Partnership and George SalterHigh gained Quality in Extended Schools status. Sandwell is one of fourlocal authorities testing the award.

Sutton Hill Children's Centre in Telford has had its official launch.The 1m centre is one of 13 being developed by Telford and WrekinCouncil.

More than 30 pupils at an extended school in the East Riding ofYorkshire are training to become peer mentors for an anti-bullyinginitiative. Driffield School is working with children's charity NCH torun the programme, which is funded by the Children's Fund.
