In Practice: Up & running - Driving up literacy skills

Parents are being offered the chance to learn to drive as an incentive to gain literacy and numeracy skills in an innovative scheme at an extended school in the Wirral. Wallasey School's Drive for Life initiative offers parents who attend courses free driving lessons, and their driving test and licence fees paid.

Three new children's centres opened in Bradford last month. Holmewood,Tyersal and Bierley children's centres were developed out of the localSure Start programme.

Face painting and stilt walking were some of the attractions at a funday to mark the official opening of Greater Hollington Children's Centrein East Sussex last Friday.

More than 90 families are enjoying facilities at The Grove Children andFamily Centre in Southwark, which had its official launch on 15September.

The centre will include childcare, on-site health visitors and a newbreastfeeding cafe.

One of the first purpose-built extended schools in the UK opened itsdoors to students in September. Hadley Learning Community in Telfordincludes a 1,200-place secondary school, a 420-place primary and a150-place special school.
