In Practice: Up & running - Solihull extended school

A state-of-the-art extended school, which will include a children's centre and IT facilities for parents, has been given the go ahead by Solihull Council. The school, which will replace Kingshurst Infant and Junior schools, is to open in autumn 2007.

Archway Children's Centre in London, opened its doors on 13 October. Thenew-build centre will offer services to around 550 under-fives and theirparents, including a cafe and yoga.

The 850,000 Moorside Children's Centre in Consett, Durham, hadits official opening last month. The centre is next door to MoorsidePrimary School and offers play sessions, a creche, and adult learningfacilities.

Children brought their parents to Northburn First School's breakfastclub for a charity event last month. The club at the school inCramlington, Northumberland, staged a Harvest Breakfast where familiescould choose between a fry up and healthy food.

Two new children's centres have opened in Birmingham. The Leaps andBounds centre in Edgbaston is one of only a few private nurseries in thearea to gain children's centre status. The Soho Children's Centre is inHandsworth, and offers a 60-place day nursery, drop-in sessions, andcourses for parents.
