What it is: A reading and writing project with a wintry theme
Goal: To get parents involved in reading with children

Two toy penguins played a key role in an innovative reading and writing project dreamt up by staff at one of Westminster Children's Society's children's centres.
The Winter's Tale project was devised by the First Steps centre - now the Marsham Street Children's Centre - in a bid to encourage parents to read with their children at home. Up to 50 children took part in the scheme and the setting worked more intensively with a smaller group that needed extra support.
Nursery children wrote about their winter experiences and drew pictures while parents were asked to make up wintry stories and share their childhood experiences of the season. Children also took it in turns to take home a couple of cuddly penguins, named Holly and Ivy, and read to them with their mum or dad.
