Gordon Brown has pledged that children's centres will not be subject to funding cuts despite the tough economic climate. The Prime Minister and others celebrated the opening of the 3,000th children's centre earlier this month.

North Tyneside Council is among the winners in this year's Breakfast Club Plus Awards for a scheme to provide a free school breakfast for every primary aged child. Other awards celebrated clubs' role in providing extra learning and promoting healthy lifestyles. www.continyou.org.uk

- Together for Children has launched a resource to help children's centres work more effectively with families. The free publication includes tips from children's centre leaders and a checklist to help identify gaps in provision. www.childrens-centres.org

- National Childcare Week runs from 6 to 12 June. Tips and resources for running an event plus a marketing pack to help settings promote childcare are available from the Daycare Trust. www.daycaretrust.org.uk
