In Practice: Know how - Reducing obesity

1 min read
The Government has revised the guidance on good practice for children's centres to include a new chapter on reducing obesity. The prevalence of obesity in England has tripled since the 1980s and, if current trends continue, at least a third of adults will be obese by 2020. The move to revise the guidance reflects ministers' belief that children's centres have a key role to play in halting this trend.

1. Children's centres can play their part through the promotion ofbreastfeeding.

Evidence strongly demonstrates a link indicating that babies who arebreastfed are less likely to become obese as they grow older.Breastfeeding needs to be viewed as part of a cohesive package ofmeasures to give children a sound start and tackle the problem earlyon.

2. Eating patterns have changed, with more foods high in fat and sugar, larger portion sizes, and less food being prepared at home. Children'scentres should deliver activities that encourage an understanding of theimportance of diet and nutrition in improving children's health. Thiscould mean helping children to learn about where food comes from andpreparing a well-balanced meal.
