The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) reportsays that comprehensive, long-term preventative work involving schools,health workers, children's professionals and others is vital.
Schools need to develop an "ethos" that encourages pupils to maintain ahealthy weight, eat a nutritious diet and exercise regularly, andnurseries and childcare groups should offer more playtime.
"Tackling the obesity epidemic isn't just about treating people who arealready obese, it's also about helping people to avoid becomingoverweight in the first place," said Dr Ken Snider, a public healthphysician in County Durham and an adviser to NICE.
The NICE report took two years to produce and has been welcomed by theDepartment of Health, the National Obesity Forum and the Royal Collegeof General Practitioners.
