The city's Great Weight Debate saw health visitors, school nurses,district nurses, practice nurses, dieticians and caterers join workersfrom the education, private and voluntary sectors to discuss tacklingthe problem. During the event, the Newcastle Falcons offered to visitprimary schools in the city to try and get children exercising more.
A multi-agency taskforce will be set up through Newcastle's localstrategic partnership to deliver the action plan.
Dr Danny Ruta, acting director of Newcastle Primary Care Trust, saidproposals included extending an obesity programme that uses physicalactivity co-ordinators to help overweight children and theirfamilies.
The co-ordinators work with children in the east end of Newcastle, where41 per cent of pupils are overweight or obese.
