In Practice: Know how - Holiday schemes

1 min read Early Years
Up and down the country local authorities have carried out assessments of childcare. One of the key findings is a distinct lack of good holiday provision in many areas. Holiday schemes are an important service offered by children's centres and extended schools. Here are some points to bear in mind.

If you're thinking of setting up a holiday scheme the first thing to do is find out what is happening already. One of your first ports of call should be your local authority to see what exists and what is being planned. Never assume there is nothing there.

Always consult parents and children and young people to find out what is needed. Don't use questionnaires. Instead, think up fun and creative ways of gathering people's views. That could be a "graffiti board" for parents to write on when they pick up their children from school or getting children to draw pictures of what they'd like to do in the holidays. You need to think about when your scheme will run, for how long, funding and fees.
