In Practice: Know how - Going green

1 min read
Environmental features are becoming more common in new children's centre and school buildings. But going green is not all about high-tech solutions like wind turbines and solar panels. There are many simple steps centres, nurseries and schools can take to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment.

If you're not lucky enough to be starting from scratch then do thinkabout upgrading lighting and heating systems. Also consider insulatingpipes, regular checks for leaks and low-cost measures to blockdraughts.

Get staff and children to turn off taps and lights and fully switch offelectrical appliances like computers and televisions when not in use.Energy and water are a major proportion of non-staff costs inschools.

Draw up a comprehensive recycling policy and make sure it's understoodby staff and children alike. Make recycling easy by providing lots ofclearly labelled bins for paper, cans and plastic. Encourage families tobring in empty containers and boxes for art projects and collect them inbrightly coloured tubs in reception or the playground. Also ask localbusinesses for interesting by-products and scrap material that you coulduse.
