In Practice: Cash in hand - Independent State School PartnershipScheme

The government has announced 4m in new funding for the Independent State School Partnership Scheme, also known as Building Bridges.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families is looking to fund up to 20 joint projects between clusters of independent and maintained schools to encourage talented children from deprived backgrounds to go to university. Partnerships will be funded for three years up to 2011 with grants of £50,000 to £75,000 a year. The focus is on maths, science and modern foreign languages. There is extra funding available from The Children's University for work with seven- to 14-year-olds in communities where educational achievement is low. The closing date for expressions of interest is 14 December.
