In Practice: Cash in hand - Children, Young People and FamiliesGrant Programme

This programme, run by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, combines five former funding streams, including Sure Start cash for the voluntary and community sector.

It funds voluntary organisations doing work of national significance that supports the Every Child Matters agenda. Funding for 2008-2009 totals about £11 million in strategic and project grants. Project grants are for one-off activities that develop knowledge about improving outcomes for disadvantaged and minority ethnic children, young people and families. Competition is fierce - last year only 32 of around 600 organisations that applied got funding. The deadline is 1 October.
