In Practice: Ask the experts - How can my school improve community cohesion?

1 min read Early Years Education
A good way to promote joint working and to address community needs is for your school to establish a partnership group, which includes representatives from local community groups and agencies, school governors, the police, teachers, parents and the wider community. And, of course, it is important that young people are consulted too.

Activities that strengthen the relationship between your school and community include holding family learning classes for local families and children and producing a community newsletter in partnership with local agencies to provide information about local activities and opportunities.

A newsletter offers a way of celebrating local achievements and improves links between the school and its community.

Another good idea is to get a dentist to hold surgeries in the school and the police to hold Partnerships and Communities Together (PACT) meetings there. And opening the school grounds can provide the children and young people with somewhere safe to play during the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays.
